Quarter eagles dated 1798 were coined from two varieties, combining separate obverse and reverse dies for each. This first variety has a closely spaced date on the obverse and just four berries in the branch on the reverse. The other die variety, number HBCC-3006, has a slightly wider date and five berries on the branch. The problematic reverse star count from the previous issue, HBCC-3004, has now been resolved with 13 stars over the eagle’s head. This choice Mint State example is one of the finest known for the variety, and may actually qualify as the finest known.
