This is an important rarity among varieties of early quarter eagles, although its true scarcity has been hidden from numismatic view. Listed as a separate variety in the Guide Book since the middle 1960s, it was not until the early 1990s that reported values truly reflected the rarity. This corresponds with the 1988 publication of Walter Breen’s Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins where he stated just nine examples to be known. Possibly 12 or 13 are known as these words are written. Although not the finest known, the example displayed is probably among the top three or four.

Purchased from Julian Leidman, May 28, 1970.

"Obverse: No crack at 4 of date. Reverse: 13 stars. Very rare."
