This was probably the second 1795 half eagle variety actually minted early in August 1795. Although several numismatists, including Walter Breen and Robert Hilt, II, have attempted to cross-reference emission sequences with Mint delivery records, it is impossible to reconstruct a scenario specifying the date and quantity minted for each die variety. In 1980, Robert P. Hilt, II, published Die Varieties of Early United States Coins , including emission sequences, rarity ratings, and his predictions of exact mintage dates and quantities for each variety. His hypothesis relied heavily on exact quantities known for each die marriage.
