This is a popular and easily recognized variety. The engraver mistakenly entered the misspelled word STATED in the reverse die and corrected this by punching an S over the errant D. Two obverse dies were used with this single reverse; while neither obverse was used with any other reverse dies. Therefore, this and the next example displayed at HBCC-3037 form a die linked pair. These were the last coined of the wide date group of 1795 half eagles. This is the only example of the variety that Harry Bass was able to acquire, although he owned three examples of the next variety.

Provenance:
From Abe Kosoff's ANA Sale, August 1968, Lot 933.

Reverse:
Commentary:
"Obverse: 1 touches curl. 5 double punched at top, both tops overlie drapery. Reverse: S over D."
