This is the final issue among early gold eagles and is generally considered a rare date, however, the term scarce is more appropriate. Approximately 150 examples survive, including several Mint-State coins, among which this Bass Collection coin is one of the finest. A single example in the Smithsonian Institution has been described as a “Proof.” We consider this example, formerly part of the famous Louis Eliasberg Collection, to be among the best. It might qualify as the finest known.

Provenance:
From the Bowers and Ruddy Galleries sale of the Louis Eliasberg Collection, October 1982, Lot 659.
