During the latter part of the Civil War, mintages continued to decline, with just 2,630 circulation strikes and only 50 Proofs produced. Approximately 15 Proofs of 1864 survive, with only two or three being “gem” quality examples such as this. As with other issues of this era, examples reside in both the Smithsonian Institution and American Numismatic Society collections. These Proofs were all struck on February 11, 1864. This example is from the Gaston DiBello Collection sold in 1970.
