Nearly all 291 Proofs minted this year were struck from normal dies, while the entire circulation-strike mintage of 5,000 coins was from a doubled obverse die. Walter Breen noted that a few Proof examples are also known from this doubled obverse die. This is clearly the most common three-dollar gold coin in Proof quality, with well over 100 still in existence.
