An international monetary convention was held in Paris in June 1867. The purpose of this convention was to consider the adoption of an international gold coinage. An agreement was reached that the coinage would be based on the French franc. In our country, a bill was introduced in Congress proposing a United States five-dollar gold coin to be used in international commerce. This coin carried the dual denomination of 5 Dollars and 25 Francs. Patterns were produced in copper and aluminum with some examples gilded. These patterns exist with plain edge, as displayed here, and also with a reeded edge.
