At HBCC-6074, a discussion of date positions described both low date and high date varieties of this pattern issue. This example is the High Date variety, with all four date digits much closer to the bust. The final digit is substantially closer to the hair curl. A quick visual comparison of these two obverse dies will suffice to illustrate the differences. Harry Bass was the first person to describe and publicize the different dies. Just two examples of this high date variety have been identified.

From Stack's sale of the DiBello Collection, May 1970, Lot 494.

"Discovery! High Date. Unique?"
