This pattern issue is without identity, for the statutory legend does not appear on obverse or reverse. Harry Bass acquired this example as a silvered copper pattern from New Netherlands Coin Company’s June, 1970, sale, a source for several of his patterns. The consignor to that sale previously purchased this from a J.C. Morgenthau sale in 1942 as being silver. This pattern issue apparently does not exist in silver, with just six or seven extant in copper.

Provenance:
J.C. Morgenthau & Co., June 1942, lot 1336; New Netherlands 61st Sale, June 1970, Lot 59.
Obverse:
Head of Liberty to left, coronet in hair, LIBERTY on coronet, hair tied back, 13 stars around, date below bust.
Reverse:
The Cereal Wreath type used for regular-issue dimes of the date.
Commentary:
"Silvered."
