This is at once an extremely popular and extremely rare pattern issue, one of a series of three denominations bearing the design. Miss Liberty is wearing an earring that appears as a shield, thus the name for this design. The reverse features a defiant eagle with raised wings. These designs were prepared by George T. Morgan. Harry Bass assembled this three coin collection in a period of six weeks, acquiring this example from New Netherlands Coin Company’s June, 1970, sale and the other denominations, as displayed at HBCC-6165 and 6166, from the Gaston DiBello Collection sold in May, 1970.

Provenance:
From New Netherlands sale of June 1970, Lot 88.
Obverse:
Head of Liberty to right with flowing hair wearing headband inscribed LIBERTY and wearing an earring shaped like the United States shield, E PLURIBUS UNUM above with stops dividing words, 13 stars around and date below.
Reverse:
Defiant eagle ready for flight to right grasping olive branch and arrows.
